One of the earliest memories I have from my childhood is of a small kaleidoscope toy that featured all sorts of colorful geometric patterns if I turned the cylinder, sort of like focusing a camera. It made quite an impression upon me, especially if I aimed it at a sunny window and got the wonderful backlighting effect.
How might I have turned out differently if I'd gotten my young hands on a cell phone instead?
Philosophical musings aside, this painting draws upon those early memories of vivid light and colors. I found this subject in The Smokies last fall. I love to be surrounded by facets of color from shimmering foliage. It sort of puts me right inside that kaleidoscope.
