I’m still filled with sheer exuberance about the beautifully mild day I enjoyed in downtown Chicago during late November. Perhaps global climate change has an upside, because just days before Thanksgiving the temperatures soared to a balmy 60 degrees, allowing me to stroll around comfortably during my photo safari.

This view along Wabash in the Loop was one of those magical “Know it when you got it” moments. From the very instant it emerged on my Nikon camera’s tiny viewfinder, I knew it would be a painting that I would create. Ironically, one of the best gauges of whether or not a subject will succeed is if it works well in “thumbnail” size. Indeed, when I worked for Walt Disney Feature Animation, all scenes and narrative sequences began with thumbnails. If an idea doesn’t work small, then why bother making it any bigger?

This recent piece continues my ongoing exploration of Chicago’s famous elevated train system. I loved this motif so much that I decided to go fairly large with it. This is a new, more expansive compositional format than what I’ve done in the past. And without a doubt, there will be more pieces of the El in the future.
