Welp, it's been one heckuva hot summer down here in Tennessee, so I decided to come back to a winter motif from Pennsylvania for some cognitive relief.

I actually started this painting en plein air in central Pennsylvania's Black Moshannon State Park. It was a mild January afternoon. The bog was still frozen with ice fishermen (and women) wandering around, but it was warm enough to set up and paint.

Alas, it was also warm enough for folks to have their dogs off leash. No sooner had I set up when someone's dog came galloping across the ice and accosted me, grabbing a blanket that I was using to keep my feet out of the damp snow and then gleefully tearing off with it across the bog.

The owner was suitably mortified and I got my blanket back. But it took almost two years for me to come back and finish this piece. Not the dog's fault. It's just that sometimes I really have to be in the right mindset to complete a painting, and I guess it took me a while to make peace with my move to Tennessee and away from beautiful winter moments like this.

I named this painting "Serene" to sum up how it makes me feel, mischievous dogs notwithstanding.
