One of my brothers graduated high school a year early and, at the time, I just thought that was the coolest thing ever. What could be better than escaping our little rural community in southern Wisconsin a year early and jetting off to school on the East Coast?

So when he started sharing mix tapes of his favorite music with me during his breaks home from school (yes, we're *that* old), he introduced me to the rock band, REM. Of course, he regarded my fondness for Prince at the time as mere folly, so we've never had a ton in common when it comes to music. But I did like REM.

When they released their blockbuster album, Orange Crush, in 1988, the percussion that introduced the title track made quite an impression on me. All of this rushed back to me when I discovered this view in the Old City district of Philadelphia late this past winter. If you follow my artwork, you know that I frequently reference the beauty of clear, crisp winter light. It's the time of year before any summer haze, and it elevates the colors of a subject. In this composition, I loved the brilliant storefronts set against the cool, cerulean sky. I could almost feel those drums from REM in the energy of this subject.
