As I’ve gained more experience with painting, it’s become apparent to me that each place has its own unique light. When I traveled to San Francisco late last year, I was taken aback by how golden the light was. Although the state’s nickname references the gold mining frenzy of the 1800s, I think it could just as easily be a reference to the beautiful quality of light on the west coast.

Regardless, this piece captures a side street view in the Mission District. I visited that area of the city on a quest to check out some of the wonderful urban murals, and I was blown away by the scale and creativity of what I saw that day. To me, this piece captures the optimism and cheerfulness of my experience during that trip. It’s all about the warmth and gentle glow of light throughout the composition. This was near 18th Street and Guerrero.
