For fourteen years, I called central Pennsylvania home. Our house was located on a windy ridge, and for most seasons, about all you would hear was the howling wind.

When my husband and I elected to move to Tennessee, we did so with the goal of doing something "totally different" for our new living situation. So we bought an old house right in the heart of an old southern city, Knoxville. Now, I rarely hear the wind and instead I hear the sounds of the city, especially freight trains. In fact, as I sit here and type this description, I can hear the whistle and rumble of a passing train.

I actually like this.

I've always enjoyed the sound of a passing train since my childhood, when I would visit my grandparents in the north central countryside of Wisconsin. There, across expansive farm fields, the whistle of a freight train during a warm summer night, with the curtains in my bedroom window rustling gently in the breeze, became one of my favorite sounds. I've re-discovered this in Tennessee, and it seemed only fitting to focus on the rail yard of downtown Knoxville.
