Opened to the public in 1958, the wild and wonderful Hyner Run State Park in central Pennsylvania began as a Civilian Conservation Corps encampment during the Great Depression. It was in such a remote location that a generating plant was established to supply electricity to the location, and even today it takes a concerted effort to get to it.

As an interesting aside, it was Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot who established state work camps back in 1930, and these camps became the model for the Federal Civilian Conservation Corps under President Roosevelt.

Beyond the natural beauty of these locations, one of the reasons why I love visiting these state parks is the history.
