My husband and I moved to central Pennsylvania almost a decade ago by way of Maryland. I was always an avid road cyclist when I was younger, but during our time in Maryland I fell out of that hobby because it was often too congested and dangerous to ride a bike on the roadways near where we lived just south of Baltimore.

When we got here, I tentatively took my bike out and discovered that while the scenery was amazing, the hills were unrelenting. My first forays were desperate, wheezing affairs that humbled me. Since those earliest rides, I’ve improved my fitness quite a bit and now I’m far less intimidated than I was during my first few years here. Hills will never be my strong suit (!), but I can usually manage to get over even the biggest ones with enough time and patience. Nonetheless, it’s during those long, intense climbs that I sometimes question my sanity, “Why am I out here, laboring so hard in black Lycra?”

The answer always comes in the discovery of wonderful subjects like this farm. I caught this view during a late summer evening just outside of State College. And I mean I just caught this view…I almost missed it entirely because of the way the farm sat so far back from the road, down the long, winding driveway. But if I’d been driving past in my car, I never would have registered this wonderful light and magical composition with the clouds in the background.

And this, my friends, is why I ride my bike.
