About Sarah Pollock, Some Informal Facts

Annie and I in Ricketts Glen State Park

Annie and I in Pennsylvania's beautiful
Ricketts Glen State Park

Favorite Artists: Rollin Pickford (watercolors), John Singer Sargent (anything), Louis Comfort Tiffany (his glasswork), JMW Turner (watercolors)

Favorite color: Purple. Purple rocks!

Favorite reading: I'm married to a business professor who's a member of the faculty at Penn State University and because of this, something completely unexpected has happened over the past several years: I now regularly read the Wall Street Journal and business periodicals that come to our house because of his profession. I also enjoy biographical books and Dilbert.

Favorite TV: American Experience, Project Runway, Iron Chef America, The Millionaire Matchmaker (totally a guilty pleasure), and Inside the Actor's Studio. Oh, and the Weather Channel, too. I'm a weather nerd. I admit it. But it's important to know whether it's going to rain when planning plein air paint outs.

Favorite food: Ice cream, especially in chocolate malts or root beer floats. Michael's Frozen Custard in Madison, Wisconsin and the Babcock Hall Dairy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison set the standard for all ice cream. Period.

Favorite movies: I enjoy good movies of any genre, but I prefer comedies. Caddyshack, Little Miss Sunshine, and Superbad are among my favorites. I also love the sheer imagination in any of the Star Wars films.

Favorite music: I like all stripes of rock from Metallica to singer songwriters including Dar Williams. My enduring favorites are Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, U2, and Moby. I also like "classic" jazz (John Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc.), some rap, and electronic / dance club music.

Favorite places: Just about any Pennsylvania state park, New York City, Ke'e Beach in Kauai, Madison, Wisconsin, and Door County in Wisconsin.

Favorite things to do when I'm not painting: Hike in Pennsylvania's state parks, swim laps (I find the monotony soothing), ride my mountain bike, and veg out to music.

And my answers to the quirky questionnaire used by James Lipton on the television program, "Inside the Actor's Studio":

What is your favorite word? Schnibbles (this was introduced to me by a friend who explained that this is the highly technical term for the small remnants of torn paper leftover after tearing a sheet from a spiral bound notebook)

What is your least favorite word? Neocon

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Music, anytime. And the outdoors. Especially during the spring, summer, and fall.

What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Incompetence

What sound or noise do you love? Either the sound of my husband laughing or the sound of the wind through a stand of pine trees

What sound or noise do you hate? Fingernails on a chalkboard

What is your favorite curse word? I'm taking The Fifth on this one

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Rock radio music DJ at an independent station

What profession would you not like to do? I wouldn't do anything that is repetitive, day in and day out. I like variety in my day, which is why I'm so blessed to be an artist.
