Twilight El, Chicago

16 x 16. Pastel on board.

Color, folks.

It's all about the colors within a scene. This piece represents a continuing exploration of Chicago's famous elevated train (el) system (please refer to Under the El, Chicago and El Shadows, Chicago for additional examples).

I actually don't like to stand beneath these structures; it's deafeningly noisy and -- dare I say it? Perilously rickety. But I find myself repeatedly drawn back to it as a subject in my cityscapes. And how could I resist the complementary color scheme of the early evening blues and purples against the oranges and rusts of the El?

This was in the heart of Chicago along Wabash during an absolutely beautiful, "let's walk around in shorts and a T-shirt" June evening.
