I love to paint cityscapes because they afford me the opportunity to take something "mundane" and make it extraordinary. It's a totally different approach from what I take in my landscape paintings, where I start with something in the field that is already spectacular and I hope that as the artist I can faithfully translate it to my page. In this particular piece, I found the play of manmade lights irresistible. This was in downtown DC, along Pennsylvania Avenue.
