Between and Betwixt

8 x 12. Pastel on board.

A view down Dearborn Street and across Wacker Street in downtown Chicago.

Trust me: I never set out to paint a cityscape with the idea of, "Wow! I want to paint some cars today." Instead, it's always about the colors within a scene. In this piece, I was intrigued by the neutral browns and greys as a backdrop for the triad of primary colors: Red, blue, and yellow.

This little piece was also fun because of the dramatic composition. The tall city buildings loom almost larger than life over the cars and pedestrian. In addition, the pedestrian walkway and elevated train corridor serve both to bridge and break the narrow gap between the buildings, thus the idea for the title of this artwork.
